Barclaycard cheques, 3% fee, 0.9% until Jan 09

  • Lucky you for getting the no-fee offer.

The Barclaycard website FAQ say you can't do a BT to a bank account, but I think it's OK with a cheque, it says you can use them to pay school fees, for example. I doubt they would check who the payee of the cheque is.

Anyone thinking of putting school fees on a credit card needs to think carefully about whether they can really afford private schooling for their children...
  • I was sent this offer in September (0.9% until Jan 2009 and no fee). I wrote a cheque to myself ("whoever you need to pay") for £7425 (90% of my credit limit). Imagine my surprise when my September statement showed next month's "Estimated Interest" as just over £140! I immediately called Delhi and was assured that "the promotional rate will be applied". I noted the person's name and the date/time of call.

No surprise then that my October statement has just arrived and £140.65 interest has been charged! I sent Barclaycard a complaint via their web site on Saturday and have yet to hear back. Will let you all know what happens.

Anyone else had a similar experience with this offer?

  • Just had this reply from Barclaycard...

    Thank you for your e-mail.

I am sorry to learn that you are unhappy with the service that you have received from Barclaycard. Our aim is to provide a first class service for our customers and I regret that you had cause to complain.

May I inform you that we are aware of the problem that some promotional cheques have been applied at the standard rate. I can confirm that the necessary amendments will be made within the next three days.

Looks like I should be ok after all :j
