Hello

First day back in from summer holiday and was told that my team ( IT in local government) was going to be outsourced :(

I have worked for over 25 years in job and would ideally want redundancy if possible ,but was told that I would most likely be Tupe'd over to whoever takes contract on

Also told that I would not know who wins contract till November which leaves me a long time of uncertainty

Any help / comments about options would be greatly appreciated as never gone through this process before (thanksfully)

Regards

My top tips (having been there)...
    • Get your LinkedIn profile up to date. Get references from other people (ex bosses etc) on LinkedIn.
    • Do any training that you can justify before cutover day.
    • Work through your finances, check the small print of any mortgage protection insurance etc.
    • Engage positively with your new employer, even if you don't feel it.
    • I did rather well out of TUPE, as did a number fo my colleagues, and I got the VR eventually.
    • Build relationships with other suppliers and partners to the council - I got my next job that way
    • Engage with the process - eg. join staff consultation groups.
    • Read 'who moved my cheese'
There was a subsequent TUPE which I didn't fancy, so managed to take myself out of scope - but to do that you need to be well regarded (its easier for an employer to make it difficult), and for there to be opportunities elsewhere in the organisation.

I'm a techie working for an out-sourcing company, I'm one of the few in my office who actually chose to join the company rather than being TUPE'd in. It's not that different from the other companies and civil service departments I've worked in. There's the same mix of high-flyers and plodders found in most offices.

Don't rule out making a new career in the out-sourcing company. Try to get your IT skills up to date, and if possible expand them.

Try to identify which parts of your job could be off-shored, and which parts the out-sourcing company is likely to still need UK-based staff for, and plan accordingly.
  • Many thanks for the replies

TBH the biggest thing was shock as had no idea that this was on the cards

Main concern was losing lenghth of service if TUPE'd and also job security in new role , I guess job security anywhere no longer exists ...

    Thanks again

Service is preserved but often redundancy packages don't carry over unless clearly contractual or part of the agreement.

Consultation can start so these things can be discussed as well as the business reasons.
