In that case I think Phase Eight dresses as previously suggested would be ideal :) They are quite pricey but there are a few on sale at the moment.
  • highly recommend sweetheart neckline and mermaid wedding gown, sexy and vintage.

Obviously don't know what size you are looking for or more importantly where you live. But when my daughter married, I was then approx size 28-30. I bought my outfit from a shop called Florentyna Dawn. They are near Stockport. It was a lined long lace dress with a lace jacket over, tiny sequins scattered on it. Original price was £325 but in the sale it had been reduced a few times and I paid £80. They have a good sale rack in store. Also I have bought from Box2 before, not the cheapest but once again look for their sales. Or even EBay.

  • Congrats, have a lovelly day, buy something you can wear again. I started out with this premise in mind, (but I was under age and eloped the first time round) spent 2 years looking, (was late 40s) so wanted to look as though I was getting married this time. Found a lovelly trouser suit, full length jacket, nehru collar, they couldnt get my size in the cream, so I did end up in a wedding shop, with a suit, full length dress, jacket in cream, BUT I will never be able to wear it again, as i would have with the trouser suit, so what a waste of money!!!
  • Can I suggest the online company FIFTY PLUS? Don't let that name put you off, the clothes are lovely and not at all frumpy. Lorraine Kelly is one of their models and she always looks fab! They do sizes 12 - 32 in everything. I've bought loads from them! They've got some lovely dressy dresses which I think might suit. Really easy to return stuff too, but they don't return postage (oops not moneysaving!).

I also bought a lovely maxi dress last year from John Lewis. It was Grecian style, so fitted round the bust then flares out at the waist in a gorgeous midnight blue. It was £99 but as it's for a special occasion I think you are worth it! Good luck and have a wonderful day!

Something old; something new; something borrowed, and something blue.

My hubbie and I were the same. Didn't want the fancy wedding hoo haa but wanted to make things official. I intended wearing a trouser suit but walked past a Chinese clothing and craft shop on my way home and on the spur of the moment bought a long blue silk Chinese dress. Didn't tell a soul except my dad. The look on our friends and families faces was priceless. (possibly they were having a right laugh) but I loved my outfit.
  • I got married on my 50th birthday, and wanted to look good on a budget and avoid the mutton dressed as lamb large-lady scenario. I looked at mother of the bride outfits and found them unbelievably dowdy, then tried bridesmaids websites and found a long gown in silver velvet with medieval sleeves. The back lacing plus slightly off the shoulder style was very flattering for plus sizes, and it didn't cost too much. Afterwards I had it altered slightly and added a colourful trim, and have worn it on a couple of occasions since.

Oxfam bridal is also a good place for cheap dresses like this one £40: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/product/debut-size-22-dusky-amaranth-pink-metallic-sheen-bridesmade-dress-prom-gown-wit-hd_100707622

Or, wear a favourite plain dress with a smart jacket, and dress it up with fresh flowers, either a corsage, carrying a bouquet, or wearing a floral headband, or all three. Or a hat with real or silk flowers, you can get a simple straw hat and decorate it with strings of poundshop pearls, feathers and silk flowers for some quick and inexpensive bridal glamour.

Lots of luck - just be comfortable, whatever you decide to wear, so you can concentrate on enjoying the occasion.
