Paying a balance transfer with a balance transfer

I recently opened a Virgin Money credit card to move all my credit card balances to as it has a 0% fee and 0% interest for 18 months. During account opening, I provided details of my TSB, Barclaycard and Amex.

For some reason, the Amex balance didn't transfer, but I wasn't too worried, as I still had 60 days to do it. So I booked a holiday on the Amex to push my spend over the threshold and get a companion voucher. Hooray.

This morning I tried to do the balance transfer online through the Virgin website, and it kept rejecting it. Phoned the call center told me that it just doesn't work with some Amex cards and there's basically nothing they can do. Searching on the internet confirmed that many others are having similar issues. Soooo annoying, because if I had known that upfront, I would have done things a bit differently!

As I really don't want to pay the balance, I just applied for a Halifax card, but the credit limit is shockingly low (understandable since I just opened another credit card a week ago!). It only covers half of the Amex balance.

Well done for making it this far. My question:

What would stop me from doing the following:
  • Do a balance transfer from Amex to Halifax of £200
  • Transfer the balance from the Halifax to the Virgin Money card of £200
  • Transfer the remaining balance from Amex to Halifax of £150
  • Optional extra: Transfer the balance from the Halifax to the Virgin Money card again of £150 (this would allow me to have all of my credit in a single place)

It seems a bit "money laundery" as I am shifting a balance twice, but I cannot see any other way to get the balance from the Amex onto the Virgin card.

(Virgin has now suggested that I contact Amex to get my 16 digit card number from them, but from internet searches, all that I will be getting from Amex would be confusion and/or laughs.).
