Declaring ALL pre existing conditions v answering insurer's specific questions

I am asking this question following a disagreement between myself and another MSE member.

Last time I renewed the policy earlier this year, i noticed that the medical questions had changed. Instead of asking us to declare ALL pre existing conditions, it just asked me to declare more serious conditions from 4 specified groups (eg. heart or neurological conditions) and any conditions for which I had had a hospital referral in the past 2 years. I did this but also wanted to declare a hereditary condition which requires medication but is mostly managed by my GP. The man to whom i spoke insisted that this wasn't necessary and it wasn't listed on my policy documents when I got them.

I'd welcome your views on this. I am due to buy a new policy very soon and have been comparing medical questions.

I also wonder whether a hospital referral has to be declared even if tests didn't reveal any new problems.

  • If you have any doubts, just call up the insurer and record the call as evidence (lots of free smartphone apps have the call recording feature).

When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, we contacted the car insurers, but were told that they only needed to know if I was on medication for the disease.

interesting point re. medication. OK my situation is different because I am talking about travel insurance but the 2nd part of my argument with the other MSE member concerned a definition of 'treatment'. Insure & Go refused to define their meaning of this. I needed to know whether a hospital appt to review/monitor medication taken since birth counted as treatment (for hypothyroidism). In contrast, All Clear gave me a clear definition.

No I don't have any real doubts. I was sure that we just had to answer specific questions but was briefly thrown when the other member was so insistent that i was wrong.
