Unexplained HSBC PLC Credit Check

Options
Hi All

I have just checked my credit file on Experian to see how it's looking these days (I was a victim of identity fraud so check it every other year) . I have an excellent rating and have never applied for credit in many years. I do have a HSBC account which I haven't used for 8 years, however my credit file states HSBC PLC accessed my credit file two months ago.

I understand they need permission to check this file, but wonder if in the original T&C's i signed years ago would allow them to check it whenever they feel? Just tried calling them but the dpt i need is closed until Tuesday.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

  • What type of search was it? Does it actually say the search was a credit application? It could have just been an administration review to check you still live at the same address as you haven't used the account for so long.

I think the only way to resolve this would be to write/ email HSBC and query this with them. I would suggest you formally put it in writing to them just in case this ever needs to be escalated as an identity issue.

If you are still concerned then you should ask for a copy of the terms and conditions that allows them to do this. Highlight the reasons for your concerns and hopefully HSBC should be able to confirm this was them doing some kind of routine check. Good luck,

  • If its a money laundering check, it could be job related. E.g. if you started a new job in financial services or part of a recruitment agency dealing with that sector.

If its not, then I dont know.

As you are an existing HSBC customer, this is the most likely explanation. Some sort of administration review.
Unless the search actually states that it was an application search, then ignore it. If it does say credit application then I would suggest calling HSBC and asking what you have applied for ...
