Around the time of May, after a long deliberation and reading plenty of reviews and learning from experience of others, I settled on buying a Dyson mini ball vacuum cleaner. Even better, I got one on offer at half price that someone had returned to John Lewis after only using once. I had considered a cordless but decided on the Dyson with a cord. And then a couple of months later, I tried my nephew's new GTECH cordless and fell in love, I had to have one, it seemed so convenient with no wires. I sold my Dyson on Ebay and got half of what I paid for it, I then ordered the GTECH cleaner and the hand held multi one. At first, brilliant, so much more easier, especially with having two cats, it meant I could give the flat a quick once over more regularly than getting the corded cleaner out. However, now the novelty is wearing off. The GTECH vac needs emptying after every use otherwise it spits the dust back out on the floor, the multi isn't half as powerful as my Dyson was, I could pull out the hose and clean round the skirting boards and ceilings in no time, with the multi the attachments keep falling off and its not as long a hose as the Dyson. So what do I do now? The Dyson I had is now full price in John Lewis and I feel loathed to pay out the money, but my flat just doesn't feel as clean. I can hardly go back to the person who bought my Dyson from Ebay and ask if he wants to do a swap. Shall I just bite the bullet and pay the money?

Could you sell the GTECH on ebay and put the money towards buying the Dyson you really want? You'll still have lost money but at least you'll have a vacuum you like.Oct GC £19.65/£45

I think the answer probably depends on what you can afford. If you can comfortably afford the machine you want, then I'd probably buy it. It sounds as if it will make your life considerably easier. If you don't have to stress about a vacuum cleaner then should try to avoid it. Life is, indeed, very short.
That said, if you don't have the money, or it would mean going without then I would suggest starting a savings pot. Maybe give up something each week and put the money in, or whatever you can comfortably spare. If you still want it when you get enough of the money saved up that you can comfortably buy it, then do so. If not, then you'll have a pot of money to spend or save as you wish.
I also just wanted to say--we aren't happy with our last vac purchase either. It was great for about 6 months and now it is rubbish in spite of very regular and careful cleaning and maintenance. We are choosing to put up with it, but you're not alone!0 -
The Gtech takes only seconds to empty ?????make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks for your replies. The issue is more with the lack of tools on the GTECH, I know it doesn't take long to empty. Has anyone here got one? I am now wishing I had kept the Dyson for the tools and the GTECH as an inbetween cleaner.0

I've got a Gtech and a vacuum cleaner, and use the Gtech just to give a quick wheek over, pick up crumbs on an "as when needed" basis. It's great for that, so lightweight and no faffing about with cables, but wouldn't replace my vacuum cleaner, which gives a more heavy duty clean and to get into all the nooks and crannies with the tools.0

I have both the GTech vacuum and the hand held accessory and love them. The cordless aspect for me is the best thing, that and the fact that it is so light. However, unlike the OP, I don't have any pets. I also have a small property, just a one bed maisonette. I don't need anything more powerful or robust and I am fed up of carrying heavier models down my stairs to my front door, the cords never quite reach.
Really, if I had owned the Dyson in the first place, I would have stuck with that.
I think if the OP can afford it, the answer is to get what you want. There is no point sticking with the GTech if you are not motivated to use it!0 -
I have both GTech's and animals. Works well for me. As others have said emptying is so simple.
Maybe look for another dyson on ebay?0 -
I have the cordless Dyson, I've always hated vacuuming but it's so much easier now. I had to save up for it, but I think it's worth itweaving through the chaos...0

I found when I first had our Gtech, it filled up really quickly and spat crud back on the carpets, but after a while that stopped. I think it was because the Dyson wasn't picking up as much crud as the Gtech did, and now the house is cleaner only the new dust gets picked up.
We've still got our old Dyson, OH uses it for cleaning the car although we have a Gtech car kit somewhere.
I'm not so keen on our handheld Gtech as you have to hold the on button on to keep it working, I think they've changed later models to a proper switch though.
Which accessories do you miss as I can't see many situations I can't use my Gtechs for.

Lurve my Gtech and ditched my beloved Miele cat and dog vacuum cleaner.
As been said, carpets are cleaner.
Emptying takes seconds. I took a tip from an earlier poster and take a plastic bag upstairs with me. ALSO, as has been said carpets are now 'cleaner'.
I've also got the handheld and find it invaluable, the machine stays on without the button needing to be held down. I've got a Dyson animal which does need constant holding and so is much less useful.
There's no way I'd give up my Gtech now!0
