Eager Beaver

So we have just exchanged and waiting to complete which is in the next few weeks.

This is a first time buy for us, so we are bit unsure on what to do, this is in regards to gas, electric, internet etc...

Obviously common sense is to wait until we get the keys, but there's a part of me thinking what happens when we get into the house on the first day and there's no electric or gas.

Bit confused on what to do really. Any advice, previous experience would be appreciated.

The house will have electricity or gas unless the present owner was not paying the bills and the power was disconnected. This is quite rare and it take few months of non-payment to get to that point.

You will simply have to take the readings as soon as you get the keys so that you can inform the provider about it because you will be liable of the bills from that point.

My experience is largely based on moving houses while renting and I am assuming its the same when you buy a place.

Ok best thing is to wait then, exactly my thoughts.

Wait, but there's nothing stopping you researching suppliers in the meantime.

Yeah I've been comparing prices, same with the internet provider. Missing out on a deal with Virgin, it lasts until the 31st Aug, but I'm worried that if I order anything now, they may cut the owners internet or even worse deliver the items or a letter to the house in my name.

There will always be deals around. They stop one and introduce a different one.

I'd say make sure the phone can be working from day 1, and that you can get the internet connected asap too. Do this well in advance.

It took BT 3 weeks to get the phone working on my last move, despite there being an existing working line, plus another week to get broadband up.

Oh and don't forget that you need house insurance from the date of exchange.

As well as taking the meter readings, it's often recommended that you take a photo of the meter so that you can prove that your readings are correct if there's any dispute later.

You can't really do this without potentially cutting off the current owner.

If it's that essential buy a PAYG dongle or such like.

The case I had was that the seller did not bother to tell BT he was moving out, and hadn't paid the bill, and it takes them 3 weeks to transfer a line in those cases.

I tried everything I could with them but to no avail, and ended up renting a serviced office for the period as I work mainly from home... and yes I tried usb dongles but the mobile signal here is almost non-existent, and you can't do much with a data rate of about 1Kb/s on a good day.
