Washing machine help please

My Bosch varioperfect has just stopped working mid wash. The drum is not turning (power is still on) and it is making a horrible noise. It sounds like it is trying to turn but something is just hitting the drum. Any ideas please? We are out of guarantee and happy to attempt to fix it ourselves.

thanks

Can you see any movement of the drum whilst it is trying to turn? If so that discounts the drive belt. If not, it could be the brushes. I am afraid the only way to really know I to pull it out from under the counter and investigate.

something like keys or a screw has gotten between the drum and its casing that enough to stop the drum turning and making a horrible noise. You need to get the back off and remove the heating element and then try and get the object un stuck. I had to use a bent coat hanger the last time it happened to me.
It could also be the bearing. make sure you unplug it before taking the back off.

I have put the machine through a rinse and spin which worked. When the machine goes onto rinse it is making a horrible noise which seems to come from the lower right area of the machine. It does sound like something is caught and dragging/banging. I guess it is a pull it out and see job :(.

With the machine empty, open the door and spin the drum by hand. If it moves freely then the issue is the pump (which would explain the noise coming from the bottom right).

This post reminds me that I need to get a new controller and pump for my Hotpoint Aquarius washer/dryer and get it back up and running.
