If you'd bothered to read the official website, you'd know that's not how it works. Again, people with no clue offering advice than can be shown to be incorrect with a basic query. Why bother?
And for those hoping for a bit of schadenfreude, I've successfully entered the US many times. The immigration officials are rarely pleasant but at least they are not completely incapable of reading English or elementary logical deduction.0 -

American Immigration officials are usually pleasant to us, with one recognising his initials on a previous entry and remembering about our new grandson.
I even had to explain about Christmas puddings to one woman. Be nice and people are nice to you.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

I'm nice to them but on every occasion I've been to the US they've displayed a serious humour deficiency.
As for the OP if he's bothered by the lack of definite answers ( though being told numerous times a new esta isn't needed seems pretty definite to me) I suggest an email is sent to the dept of homeland security is in order.
We got an esta to travel to NY in March and when we got to the airport we had to put where we where staying before we could drop off the luggage...and again on the little form they issue you with. Had to do it again when we went to Wasington last week.0 -

Same here - first at check in at Manchester then the green form on the plane for the security checks in the USA.0 -
Taken direct from the Get an ESTA for US travel section of this website
By the looks of things you still need one. Id say apply for one and it will tell you if yours is still valid.
You MUST complete an ESTA, even if passing through
Everyone going to the States by air or sea needs to fill out an ESTA form. If you haven't, even if you're only meant to be in transit, you may be denied boarding or can even be sent straight back home.
However, given the fact you have slagged off the majority of posters offering advice, then don't take my advice, but at the end of the day, it's your call0
