Flickering lights in our new house!!

  • Unfortunately people on here usually say don't worry..!

Our electrics came up as dated but we just expected to need to update when we moved in and we did. Lots of things weren't dangerous but weren't really done right either and the gas and water needed bonding. Cost us a grand in the end but means the house is as safe as it can be electrically and if anything will help us when we come to sell.

We thought the same with the boiler too. Expected it to cop out but touch wood it's been OK so far. The seller was never going to budge on price and in Sept last year we had already had a house fall through and there was nothing around that we liked. Even now there is still very little I have seen that I would want to buy. Older houses are more expensive than I anticipated though!

Ive had led down lighters flicker due to the transformers starting to fail AND because the screw terminals were not tightened up on the transformer

Also had cheap wickes ones where the crap clip connectors started arcing , cut them out and replaced with block connectors

are they on/off switches or dimmers,

Some lightbulbs are not compatible with dimmers such as energy saving ones

And you took advice from a bunch of anonymous sados on the internet and decided to save the cost of an elecical report, gambling that those sados knew that the electrics were fine...

I may be a saddo, but no way am I a sado....

It's unlikely all the wiring is failing simultaneously. If someone skilled can test with a meter, they may find a fault and rectify it quite cheaply. You can then plan and budget for improvements later.

There, not sadistic at all. :A

On the home buyers report it said that it looked dated but everyone on here said not to bother :o

You probably have a cause of action against those people on here. Get an electrical report, get the work done, then sue those sados/saddos who told you not to bother.

Let us know when the court date is, I would love to attend!

Some dimmers are also not compatable with energy saving lightbulbs as well. If you have older dimmer switches they can cause flickering if you use low energy bulbs, this can sometimes be fixed by using one or two old fashioned higher powered bulbs in the fitting.

You can also replace the dimmer part of the switch with one that handles LED bulbs, like this - http://www.varilight.co.uk/configurator/product.php?code=Z0JP250-P

Worth asking your neighbours if they have any problems too, as it could be the local electricity network (low volts/flicker) rather than your house's wiring itself.

Was just about to post that , we had a power outage twice last year , first time they changed a blown substation fuse , second time the whole unit .

After that found that my power line adapters worked properly for the first time in ages , the substation fuse must have been producing noise and minute flickering on the supply
