Home insurance - renew or can I buy as a new customer

Hi, a quick question about home insurance.
Our insurance expired yesterday, I've been quoted £162 to renew, but as new customer on a comparison site I've been quoted £130.
I tried calling them this morning but the retention line was busy so I was given a direct number to call back on - they didn't tell me it closed at 1 so haven't been able to call anyone (God knows why as I called at 12.30 so you'd have thought they would have know that).
Can I simply sign up to my current company as a new customer? We don't pay by direct debit and normally just pay by card. I'm wondering if I can as the policy has expired I presume this is ok? Or is this not allowed?
Thanks

don't forget cashback websites and the Together mutual deal MSE has with £75 pound cashback via M+S card
But I don't see why you can't get it as a new customer as you have let the insurance lapse"It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"
