Laptop servicing

Hi All,

My laptop is running slow, lagging just logging in and not opening programs such as Word.

I have a windows 10, Intel i7, 8GB Ram, 64bit, NVIDIA GEFORCE graphics etc so the system should be okay. The laptop is definitely running slower than when I first bought it and I haven't been on dodgy sites, added any significant programs of data, in my experience this just seams to happen every so often - so I don't mind getting it serviced, and paying as otherwise I can't get anything done!

Just what do people advise:- I've googled this quite a bit but obviously a lot of the links I have been on are trying to push software:-
As I see my options are:
- Go to PC world
- Download software which is meant to speed up working speed
- Go to independent IT guy
- Or other advise?

What do you think?

Nope. Unless your laptop is 4-5 years old there is no need for a full service of it.

You could backup and do a factory reset yourself to save any costs. The prime cause of slowdowns is years of crap building up and installs/uninstalls leaving a whole host of stuff running in your startup and services.

Don't pay for it to be serviced, you can do it yourself. Maybe you get yourself an external portable hard drive and move everything you don't want to lose to it so when you factory reset the laptop you don't lose the important stuff.
  • That's a good idea! I'll look at doing that.
Even though I use a computer everyday I still feel out of my depth on these matters! Would this mean reinstalling windows 10 again? and other software?

Is doing a factory reset better than using boosting software?

Don't pay any money yet! It's much easier with Windows10 to reinstall the operating system...
    1. backup any important data AND program licenses you may have paid for yourself
    2. do a windows 10 "reset" with "keep data" option

    Reinstall OS, avoid installing junk.

For example iTunes and iCloud are MASSIVE resource hogs and Apple software engineers seem to deliberately make their software so that it cripples Windows systems and yet runs fine on Mac OS.
My GFs new laptop (a refurbished Lenovo T410) used to start up in 20 seconds, after installing the above, that changed to around 3 minutes.
