Carpets being fitted - how much payment to retain before job completion?

Hi
I have chosen my carpets from a supplier and they will be fitting them for me too.
They want full payment up front. I would prefer to retain 10% until successful completion of the job. Is this fair?
Many thanks

You abide by their terms or shop somewhere else. But I believe its unfair for you to withhold payment, Carpets will be cut etc to the size you need and they are of course not willing to do this until paid
Normally fitters are paid separately on the day. Have you bought many things were you didn't pay for it up front?0 -
Good luck with that one. The difference in time between not having carpets and having fully fitted ones is a matter of hours.
I've never had a problem with a carpet fit. If I did, I doubt 10% would cover any major problem, unless I had 10 carpeted rooms and the problem was in one.
If those are their terms, you can try and negotiate different ones, but it seems a very strange job to hold a retention on. I don't see the point.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

If you've chosen good, reputable fitters you should have no problems getting any issues that arrive after fitting resolved.0

As others have said if those are their terms then you either agree or go elsewhere.
I would go elsewhere as I have never paid up front to have carpets fitted.
The last time we paid 10% deposit and went into the store the day after they were fitted to pay the balance.
They also beat every other price we were given and did a brilliant job so it did not cost us more to have this service.0 -
Thanks all. Agreed to pay for the materials upfront and the labour charges on the day of fitting.
Works out to about 15℅ retention.0
