Renting without a guarantor?

Hi,
I'm a student getting my first flat. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who meets the requirements to be my guarantor. Is there anything I can do to still secure the property? It is being let though a letting agent so I don't imagine they'll be very lenient. I've heard of paying for a guarantor online with Helping Hand. Would giving 3 months rent in advance help anything?

    I never had issues with guarantors through university, but then I paid 6-12 months upfront.

    Yes, paying rent in advance will help. In addition, when I did that a few years ago (paid 6 months upfront for a 12 year lease), they waived the credit check requirement, saving £100. That was through an agent.
