MBNA due date in bank holiday weekend with direct debit in full

Hello,

I pay my MBNA credit card off in full every month with a direct debit.

My statement says they will take the payment on or after the 28th. But 28th is a Sunday and its a bank holiday weekend.

Does anybody know from experience if they charge interest in this scenario? From their statement, it would seem so.

The statement says:
Please ensure that your payment is credited to your account by the due date.
If your payment due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday, these are
non Business Days, so you may need to allow extra time for your payment to reach
us.

Provided there are no restrictions on your account: (1) Payments made using the Faster
Payments Service will be available for you to use within 2 hours of us receiving cleared
funds from your bank. (2) Payments made using debit cards will be available to use the
next day. (3) For all other payment methods, your payment will be available for you to
use at the start of the Business Day on which we are due to receive cleared funds from
your bank.
But this part implies that the direct debit they initiate will always be credited as if it was paid on the payment due date even if the money does not actually leave until Tuesday. It usually takes 3 days to execute a direct debit, which they would have started in advance of the 28th, presumably some time this week.
Your direct debit payment will be credited to your account on your payment due date. Please note, your direct debit payment will not be varied to take account of any additional payments you choose to make.

No. A DD means they will always take it appropriately and you won't be charged interest

Bank holidays happen all the time. People who make payments in full by direct debit with almost all credit cards do not pay interest. If they had been these forums would be full of people complaining about it. It's common for DDs to be taken shortly after the due date.

    You'll be fine.
  • zx81 and Nebulous2, thank you for the clarification and reassurance! :):)

Well I only get 5 a year (Two at Christmas, two at New Year and Easter Monday) So it certainly feels like they happen all the time - for other people!

Swings and roundabouts though, I get a generous annual leave entitlement.

Is there anything stopping you taking annual leave on the bank holiday days if you want to be off at the same time as other people?
  • In my experience, most direct debits I've had will be taken the next working day if the original date falls on a weekend or bank holiday.
