Scaffolding Question Regarding Regarding Cladding

Options
Hi,

We had a quote to replace some Cladding on our home, we have a flat roof. We were quoted £1000 to get this replaced.

The surveyor has come out and said we needed scaffolding as we have external stairs and they need to get over it safely which is fair enough. He didn't. Say there would be a cost involved.

We had a phonecall today and we've been told that we need to pay £650 for the scaffolding.

It's not stipulated in the contract who is responsible for scaffolding. Surely the guy who came and did the quote should of realised this is the first place and quoted accordingly. Should I be responsible to pay this or is it the companies fault and they should foot the bill?

Thanks

They haven't even done the work yet, so I'd like to see you try to get them to pay for it. They just won't turn up!

It might be a surprise to you that scaffolding is required to keep the operatives safe, but effectively expecting something for nothing before the work is done isn't good.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Which I understand, but surely it should have been part of the initial quote?
  • At most, they might owe you an apology if they really did not make it explicitly clear that you would have to meet the cost of this.

But as for getting them to just absorb the cost themselves, dream on I'm afraid.

He won't have known how much the scaff would be til the company that were going to erect iit looked at the site.

They probably should have made you aware that it would be needed and priced separately, but it will be your cost, no way out of that
  • That's fair enough, no one has been to look at the site from a scaffolding firm.

They only need it for 2.5 meters of the overall 10m.

They're due to fit at the start of next week so they've left it really late telling us.

They require different knowledge/expertise to be able to quote for works and scaffold hence most don’t,
Its not uncommon for works not to include the cost of scaffold. If there quote stipulated it included scaffold they pay if it didn’t you pay .... Scaffold is commonly erected hired for an initial period of 1mth then daily, weekly, monthly increments after,

Don't be surprised if scaffolders leave it up longer in quite times of year than initial contracted period without charging extra most only want to take it down when they have somewhere else for it to go up
