Gas Engineer Not CORGI Registered - Okay to Use?

Buying a house. The seller (grudgingly) paid for a gas safety check, but the engineer who carried out our safety check doesn't look like they're CORGI registered. Here's the details I found:

http://www.trustatrader.com/traders/brewins-ltd-heating-engineers-and-gas-fitters-castlestoneygateknightonfreemanwestcotesbraunstoneaylestone/

They have no website.

Do they look okay?

    Page not found.

Only use Gas Safe engineers, a mistake with gas could blow yours and your neighbour's houses to pieces, but you know that.

One other thing, a house we were buying had used a non-registered gas engineer and then a non-registered electrician to test the electrics! Like we would think that was OK!

If you like the house send in your own competent and qualified engineers to test things.

As above, it's 'Gas Safe Register' now, not CORGI. Can't open link.

  • An electrician doesn't have to be 'registered' to test electrics. He should be qualified.

It is only the employing firm that is 'registered' under self-certification for Part P of the Building Regulations. The individual operatives need not have any qualifications at all.

For gas the individual operative has to be registered with Gas Safe as well as his employing firm.

I think this is the link you meant: Brewins Ltd

Put their postcode (LE9 6YW) in this search box and you'll find them: https://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/find-an-engineer/

Gas safety check is only a requirement for landlords letting a property. So a buyer can use any sort of engineer they like to check out a potential property purchase. Whether they want to rely on the competence of a gas safe registered person is up to the buyer.

I am not surprised the seller did it grudgingly. Why would you require one? It tells you nothing about the state of the appliances in the house, or the boiler, just that it is "safe" at that time.

Actually they can't, because it is illegal for an unregistered fitter to do any work on gas carrying parts. This means that an unregistered fitter cannot even do a basic pressure test which involves opening a test nipple.

The only checking an unregistered fitter could do would be to look at the outside of the boiler, suck his teeth and say "that'll cost..."

Just like a Car M.O.T then.
As a buyer, would I want one? Definitely.

I would much rather see a complete service record.
