is this a decent price for a desktop PC ?

I have had my current desktop for about 15 years, so it has certainly served me well. Running on XP it is now getting a bit slow and certain things no longer work .. like listening to the radio.

The computer was built for me by a local company, so I'll probably go back there.

they have provided these two quotes ..

Option 1 £499 excl VAT

Computer Intel i5
8GB Ram
1 TB Hard Disk SATA
DVDRW
Network card 10/100
Windows 10

Option 2 £460 excl VAT
Computer Intel i3
8GB Ram
1 TB Hard Disk SATA
DVDRW
Network card 10/100
Windows 10

Are these quotes OK ?

I'm probably tempted to go with option 1, i5 instead of i3 but don't really know why

Any comments would be appreciated

thank you !

  • £600 for those specs is a little steep I'm afraid. Even places like PC world will beat that.

    Seems high, tbh.

Even through a quick search I was able to find this on Amazon for £367 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B011R62HG0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B011R62HG0&linkCode=as2&!!!!!wwwzoostormco-21

You don't say which i5/i3 it is so it might be a newer i5 to the 4460, so could possibly be a bit more powerful and/or use less energy but depending on what you use your PC for it might not be that noticeable.

Personally, for £499 I'd expect a bit more. A 128GB SSD for a boot drive and a larger capacity HDD for starters... though I do appreciate that local shops find it difficult to cover their expenses sometimes (most of them have closed round here now) so there's usually a bit of a markup.

Do either of the quotes offered include a monitor? That would explain some of the extra cost.
She would always like to say,
Why change the past when you can own this day?

You should consider building your PC yourself. It's really easy, you don't have to be particularly technically-minded. It's like Lego. Things can only go in one way and in one place, and it all comes with diagrams and instructions, and if you get stuck, there is plenty of help and videos on the internet.

It usually works out cheaper (or better spec). You just choose the parts, put it all together, plug everything in, and put the Windows disc in the drive to install the OS.

A very mediocre and out of date spec for both of them and overpriced as well.

As others have already specified above, an ssd should be included no matter what as it would transform the performance.

You don't say what you would be using it for, apart from listening to the radio, but if we knew more about your requirements then there are many people on this site who have the expertise to point you towards an ideal specced pc.

But then you are stuck with the maintenance...trying to figure out which part is failing.
It's not just about price. people want after sales service. Not to have to take the thing apart in order to send back individual parts under warranty.
Building is for those who are happy to undertake maintenance for themselves.
