Afternoon all!
I have just finished up a jar of pickled onions with our lunch and was wondering if the vinegar can be reused? OH says no, but I reckon I could make a jar of pickled onions and use the vinegar?

I love the vinegar in pickled onion jars. Can't wait to eat all the onions and pour the left over vinegar into an empty bottle.
I think it has a much stronger flavour and is much more like the vinegar I used to get from the off-licence straight from the barrel when I was a child, many, many moons ago.
I don't buy ordinary vinegar any more but buy pickling vinegar when it is around and use that for all culinary purposes.
Go ahead and use it however you wish, it's good stuff.

I have a small piece of cheese cloth that is specifically used for straining vinegar after eating the onions, to filter out any bits .
I use the vinegar for everything from cleaning to eatinglove me a couple pickled onions , and was really pleased to find they were free on SW
today's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.
Living on my memories, making new ones.

If you aren't going to mess around sterilising the jar and boiling the vinegar your new pickles may have a shorter fridge life than the bought ones, but it is fine to reuse for pickling, or other vinegary useages.
I also like using the oil from sundried tomatoes, it makes great salad dressing. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Love the vinegar from pickled onions, I can drink it! Also use the vinegar from beetroot in a curry.0

Oh, Anne-Marie I am glad to know you! I thought I was the only person in the world with a passion for vinegar. My friends and family think I am weird because I reckon almost everything can be improved by a big slug of vinegar.
Did you know that a teaspoon of vinegar stops hiccups dead in their tracks. A spoonful of sugar will do the same but I prefer vinegar.
Long live vinegar! (and mint sauce.)

Easy resuse is pickled eggs. We are trying to get through a jar of onions so it's ready for the eggs0

You are definitely not alone Monnagran, bet we could start up a little club on here, and yes I did know about the hiccups cure, much better than sugar, which sounds gross.
My hubby and daughter always took the mickey out of me too, but didn't fail to enjoy the cooking results. If they ever had a skin complaint of any sort, they would end up asking will it be vinegar, tea tree or lavender oil this time? (I obviously am very predictable.)
I make citrus vinegar for cleaning using peels from any citrus fruit (it's usually lemon, mandarin and orange in my case as I have trees, only one of each, and hopefully ruby grapefruit in the not too distant future).
I also did a banana peel and another pineapple vinegar a while back, but ended up having to throw the latter out, as I forgot about it, and it kind of dried out, so will have a bash at it again next time I have a pineapple, as from memory, it used up all the bits of a pineapple that you would normally bin.
One of my favourites is pomegranate which is really cheap to buy here here, but easy to make....am sure I put a recipe on here before for that one. Goodness it's really good in all sorts of things, love it on salads, in a dip with some extra virgin olive oil, and wow on chips! Also use it when making onion marmalade and other berry chutneys to serve with cheese. You really must try it, if you haven't already.
Going to have a bash with raspberry vinegar soon using frozen raspberries, as I can't get fresh here.0 -
i tend to use the vinegar for cooking or just sprinkled on chips, is such a waste to throw it away.
just a quick aside, when are pickling onions in season? I'm sure its about now. our market doesn't sell them anymore so am going to jump on the train to a nearby town that has a much bigger market, I really don't want to travel to it more than once or twice.0 -
I'm another one who reuses it; for culinary and for cleaning; I currently have quite a large stock, because DH has been on a bit of a pickled onion bender lately, as we've been living on salads.
And if I have sundried tomatoes, I keep the oil for use in HM pizza bases. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I'm another pickled onion vinegar fan. Although it seems a waste of good vinegar, which I'd much rather have on chips, could it be used in the washing machine like the malt vinegar that I already use? (Only in dire emergency of course...
)
Love pickles, beetroot and chips as a real treat! The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.
