Searching for investment policy's

I am wondering if anyone can shed some advice.
Myself and older sibling are the executors of our late fathers estate, the contents of his estate are in hand and at the final stages being dealt with by our solicitor.
The issue we face is that we were lead to believe prior to our father passing, that he held investment policy's amounting to a fare sum of money. Unfortunately the relationship between us and our late fathers wife has completely broken down, as due to her own wealth she was left out of the Will. We've been through the Inheritance Provision Act of 1975 and paid a settlement to her.
We have only been privy to information and documents she herself provided from our fathers study, and sadly we believe that not all his finances have been disclosed to us, and firmly believe there has been some wrong doing!
I have performed online searches which only search for 'Dormant or Unclaimed' policy's, these searches came up with nothing.

Is there any way of searching for investment policy's that were once held, or that have had a name change within a certain time span of say the last five years.?

Also is there any way of being able to check if someone has once held monies/investments off-shore.

We really feel that we are at a stumbling block, but also can't settle as we know that things are not all that they appear.

No, unless they turn up on Wikilieaks, thats generally the point of them !
