Phoning in Belgium.

Hi all,

What's the cheapest way to make calls to other countries when in Belgium?

Is it to buy a calling card of sorts and then call from a public phone box?

Are calls from the hotel a no-no?

Calls from a hotel are always a no-no, surely, unless there is really no alternative. Bit like calls from hospitals, rip-off. I usually buy phone cards in Germany, and use call boxes, same in Belgium, I suppose. Don't know if it's the cheapest option, but then, there aren't too many options anyway. Mobiles are ridiculous, sadly. One day they will be universal, I suppose, but we still have to wait awhile.

Someone may know specifically about Belgium, but now that roaming charges have been slashed it may work out cheaper to phone using your mobile - Tesco Standard mobile plan, for example, charges 35p per min to call anywhere in the EU zone, no matter where you are. 15p per min to receive, anywhere in EU.
