catkins - can I ask how long you need to cook black beans for as I have some but there are no instructions on the bag as to how long to soak and cook for.

    Thanks

I usually boil them for about 15 to 20 minutes then simmer for around 30 minutes

  • I was thinking, for fun, and in the spirit of the thread title and the tv programme - how about giving OH an 'Eat well for less' Doritos challenge?

Buy a few small bags of Doritos and other supermarket own brand tortilla chips, put them in bowls with numbers on paper underneath, and ask him/her to blind taste test them, and put them in preference order. You will have each brand name written down next to the number on a separate piece of paper, then you can show your OH at the end. Like the programme, you could get some interesting results!

Maybe then they could do the same for you with, say, coffee, or whatever brand name you like.

Anyone with a family member who insists in a brand name could try this, make it a game and a bit of fun. Even if the brand name wins, often the programme finds a much cheaper alternative that's an acceptable second?

I don't use lentils or oats. I always bulk out my Bolognese and chilli with extra veg. I've been doing this for so long now I wouldn't enjoy it 100% meat (or Quorn).

Which veg I use varies depending on whatever I have in but typically onions, mushrooms, carrots, courgettes, celery and peppers along with the tomatoes. DH and I like veg so I just chop it up roughly although I know some people grate it to hide from children (of all ages;)).

I have just started some batch cooking (after defrosting the freezer and giving it a good tidy!). I've got some mince cooking slowly with onions, celery, carrot, pepper, aubergine, tomatoes and the leftover aduki and mung beans from a batch cook of pulses earlier.

Chickpeas are soaking to be done later. And the chest freezer is going to be excavated shortly as I start filling the other small freezer with 'ready meals' over the next couple of weeks.

It's payday tomorrow so my new month will kick off then. :D

My meal plan for the first wee while is almost complete. It includes mirry's burgers, some own brand veggie mince with lentils and a lot of roast potatoes because I love them.

39p for a loaf of bread in aldi? Brilliant. :T I can't believe I didn't discover this shop sooner. I'm onto this. :)

I'm losing the tortilla taste test idea. Thanks Golightly 72. I'll get onto that too this week.

I input my fortnightly shop into mysupermarket.com to get an idea of the cost and it was £14 cheaper in aldi than Tesco! definitely much cheaper

I use red lentils. 400g of mince and 3 handfuls of lentils will make 8 portions of lasagne I just simmer away till they aren't noticeable
Oh now I really do feel like a right piggy pig

We have 1kg lean mince, 1kg of carrots, four onions, 4 peppers, half a big tub of mushrooms and four tins of tomatoes for ten portions of Bolognese :o
