It's also not the OP's wife's commute ... it was a test run used on several different vehicles. ;)

This for sure. In winter I arrive on the local station platform a lot colder if I've driven rather than cycled the 3 miles.

    Today is Friday.
    The year is 2016.
    It is August.

This is a bad game. Pointing out the obvious isn't much fun.

Not with my Pug. Coldest days over the past couple of winters and he was blowing warm within the first half mile :D One of the most efficient heaters I've ever known on any car - petrol or diesel.

And yes, even multi-point injected petrol engines still enrich at start-up but nowhere near as much (or for as long) because the inlet tract from injector to cylinder is a lot shorted (generally more importantly) a lot straighter than most carb manifolds.

I used to have a petrol Astra 1.6 and a few years ago I bought a Astra 1.7 TDI. I'm really happy with the savings I'm getting. It might not be much but I was filling the tank every 3 weeks and now (same size tank roughly) I fill up every 5 to 6 weeks. I only really do short journeys, maybe a few times a month I will do a longer journey of 15-50 miles depending on what I'm doing that month!

My tax is only £130 a year and my old car was almost £200.

If they are both the MK4 (1998-2004) then the tank size is the same if i remember right? 52 litres.

I currently own the 1.8 and i can get 380 miles on a tank. I could probably squeeze 400 but i've never dared to chance it.

Tax is £265 for me though :( Or at least it was last time around.

I keep wanting to change it, but i've had the car for 8 years & very little has gone wrong outside of normal wear & tear items. You can't really put a price on reliability.

My old one was the MK4 and the new one was a Mk5. I get between 400-450 per tank now depending on motorway journeys.
  • What do you think of the MK5?

I prefer it in the 3 door with the XP kit, although having driven it i find the rear window pretty poor for seeing out of.

Another gripe i had was the lack of a temp gauge (although i believe this can be accessed via the MFD, though not sure if this is trim level specific).

I've only driven the 1.6 version. I wouldn't mind the 150 diesel but i've heard they have chocolate gearboxes.

I had one in for MOT that had been doing 4 miles a day for the previous year, the turbo let go on the smoke test and the engine ran on its own oil.

    Electric car?

My wife's car does sub 4000 miles a year. I'm thinking of getting an electric car when hers needs replacing as its only used for short trips and so charging isn't an issue - can be done overnight.

Depreciation on EVs is huge, so used prices are comparable to a petrol car of similar size and age

Granted finding one for £1000 is unlikely - but a couple of grand more would get you a three year old.
    Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)

    Savings target June 18 - £22,281.99 / £25,000
