Barclays Additions charges

I was mis sold a Barclays Additions account in 1996. Was very young at the time, didn't need it but coerced into it by Barclays rep.
Anyway I complained to Barclays & was told that they consider a reason amount of time to complain about charges to be 6 years. As I hadn't complained within this timeframe then they would not refund any charges.
Anyone else had this??
What's my next step, can I appeal.

Yes. it is a very common rejection and the FOS are accepting of it.

The regulator has two timebar rules in place.
1 - 6 years from the sale of the product
2 - 3 years from being reasonably aware of an issue to raise a complaint.

It is the longer of those two periods that matters and both have to be satisfied to be able to time bar it.

The banks started to issue annual benefit statements some years ago. Those banks that did this have been successfully timebarring people.

If you think the timebar has been applied incorrectly then you can give them your reason for this and see what they say. You do have the right to go to the FOS. However, if the timebar is correct, then the FOS will not review the complaint as they cannot deal with correctly timebarred complaints.

You mention the 6 year rule but did they make any reference to the 3 year rule?
