Minecraft Realms overcharged by Mojang AB

Options
My daughter wanted 180 day Realms from her minecraft account. It is a UK account. The price on the screen said £33.99. When paying it said €42.99, didn't seem to be an option to buy in £. Paid with paypal and their currency conversion came to more than £38.

I emailed Mojang AB who own Minecraft, they first refused to believe I was offered £33.99, then said the charge would always be in Euros so they don't see a problem.

Going to their own webpage in the UK here https://minecraft.net/en/realms/pc/ shows the £33.99 price being offered. Clicking through and logging into an account shows the Euros price €42.99.

I have complained again to Mojang that they need to show how to purchase at the offered price or that it is breaking UK trading standards to make that offer.

Has anyone else had this problem?

So Mojang AB are in Sweden.

If they were in the UK then perhaps your penultimate sentence might be true.

Sorry but unless they're in the UK, they're not subject to UK law or under the jurisdiction of our trading standards. Furthermore even in the UK, retailers dont need to sell for the advertised price, just they might fall foul of consumer protection from unfair trading regulations if they deliberately price their goods in a manner that was likely to mislead the average consumer and cause them to take a different decision as a result.

No idea what the law is in sweden (where the group is based going by the website).

Can't see the purchase screen as it requires a login. However if they told you on the purchase screen it was €42.99 and they charged €42.99, its not them overcharging but rather the value of the GBP has fallen.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

    €42.99 / £32.99 gives an exchange rate of 1.265. €42.99 / £38.00 gives 1.131, which is much closer to reality post-Brexit.
  • I would agree that the website is being a bit foolish to suggest that the price is £33.99 if they charge in Euros. They should change that, or at least indicate it's approximate.

However if when you went to pay you were told a price in Euros before you did so, this doesn't breach any UK trading standards laws even if they were applicable.
  • Well they got back to me and admitted that cards were charged in £ and Paypal in Euros.

    Lesson learnt now.
