Help with travel to Australia and beyond without definite dates /destination

Hi all my daughter and her boyfriend have a 7 week contract at PGL Australia next January , They would like to travel around for a good few months and then maybe make their way onto Asia , ( they have saved enough money but would also like to work in Australia casually if possible )

What are the best way to purchase plane tickets without definite return dates and follow on destinations?

They can be reasonably flexible with outward journey but have no set time to return to uk and will not know where in the world they will be when returning

Thanks in advance xx

Technically for backpacker insurance you are meant to have a return ticket

My daughter bought tickets once she was in Australia , back home here before she returned to Australia and recently when they went on to New Zealand

Just book a ticket with a definite outbound date and the return date for their current best estimate.

Most fare classes on a long haul route will be amendable, check the terms and conditions, sometimes it will be free or it could en an extra £50-£100, it might be a balance between the cost of changes and the price of the initial ticket.

Perhaps they could travel on one-way tickets?

That could be a problem for entry to Australia. My niece bought a one way ticket to NZ but discovered while she was in Fiji on the way there that she would be refused entry without an onward ticket so she had to buy one there and then.

They could look at Round The World tickets, they are fairly expensive but generally very flexible (at least, they were when I last bought one 26 years ago!).

The OP mentioned that they planned to do casual work while in Australia. For that to be legal they would have to use a Working Holiday visa. It is a condition of that visa that they have enough money for a ticket home, but not that they actually have a ticket home. See

Yes, I think times have changed.

I bought one 24 years ago, ended up changing most often flights at least once and one of the flights three times I think., no cost then.

Sta do open ended tickets and can have date changes on them. I think there abit more expensive but gives more flexibility
