Which travel insurance offers medical evacuation as standard?

I'm off to Cambodia later this year.

Friends have advised that we need cover that, should a medical emergency arise, we will be airlifted out of cambodia and into Thailand (or a similarly improved health system nearby).

Which companies offer this? I am getting a bit sick of emails saying something to the effect of, "if you fall ill, then ring the number at the time and do what they say"

Thanks in advance.

I doubt if there's any insurance that offers an automatic "fly you out of the country" ticket - all the ones I've ever used have required you to contact them first

Thanks for link, but they are one of the companies I've already contacted who say I'll need to ring at the time and see what they say.

There are specialist companies that guarantee this cover, but I just can't find them!

There is unlikely to be a guarantee. The decision is based on best medical advice.
So if the Cambodian doctor advises that you need an airlift, one will be arranged.
How else can they organise an airlift(or do anything) if they aren't contacted? What are you thinking?
If leaving the country and transporting yourself to a better hospital in the region costs less than £500, you don't need to contact them at all. Just pay up front and claim when you get back.

Once you are in the new hospital, you can give them your insurance details, so that they can obtain a Guarantee of Payment for your treatment..

have a look under the Medical and Emergency Expenses section on policy wordings online and check if repatriation and evacuation are covered within that section. It would more than likely say something to the effect of ".....if it is deemed necessary by the attending Drs.....and that you have contacted the assistance services and obtained approval and recommendation...."

you could, however, request to have a letter in writing from the insurance company that evacuation would be covered. Again, though the letter would state something to the effect of "....on approval of the Medical Drs attending and/or in contacting the 24 Emergency Assistance Dept..."...

Either way, reading a policy wording helps!
