Free boiler replacement for 30 year + boilers?

So British Gas came round today to service the boiler in our house and the 2nd boiler in the granny flat currently occupied by elderly MIL. The engineer claims that as both boilers are over 30 years old, we qualify for a free replacement boiler, no strings attached... A British Gas sales person is visiting on the 12 September to share details of the scheme.

I'm not on any kind of benefits so personally think this is total carp but my wife is insistent the engineer said anyone with a boiler over 30 years gets a free one..

Well... if the gas engineer said it then it must be true.

But a little googling shows that it is means tested. If it does (and I highly doubt it) turn out to be true, let us know as I am sure a lot of us would like a new boiler.

I agree - he's trying to get someone to pester you to have nice shiny new ones installed at great expense - YOUR expense. Usually, it's around half the price if you get a reliable local engineer to do the replacement.

As has been said, the free ones are linked to what your income is and also to what benefits you are receiving.

There is also, in some areas, a separate scheme run by some, but not all, local authorities which gives out free boilers but this is dependant on postcode area - ask your council, they can only say no we don't run that scheme.
