What type of skirting do we have?

Options
We've had a fire surround removed from our living room, and thought we could save (a little bit of) money by doing the skirting ourselves! We just want it to match the existing skirting, although we know it won't be perfect as we'll be joining to an existing piece along the wall.

The big problem is, we don't know what our skirting is! It looks like it's just a plain board with some decorative ... thingy on top? We've been looking online but haven't found any skirting that matches this.

(Don't worry about the floorboards, we're on those today.)

It's 'Torus' skirting board. Looks around 144mm high. However, you may struggle to match it exactly as there is no industry standard and different manufacturers had their own take on dimension, rebates etc.

I would suggest you take the new stuff right into the corner, rather than trying to join it as any slight variations will be lost in the corner.

It's a bodge. A bit of dado rail, some roofing batten & some hardboard. You may get something like it but may need to cut it down as I doubt it's a standard size.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. The board itself is 220mm, and then the top part is another ~50mm. Oh well, worth checking.

I am a total ignoramus on matters practical. But my dad wasn't. He had all sorts of tools to make the patterns on skirting boards. So maybe an old style craftsman could make what you need? Not going to be cheap though.

Look under 'mouldings' or 'moulding profiles' or 'picture rail profiles' (or google these terms) to get something that matches the top part, and get some plain MDF or timber the same size as the lower part.

Or find a router bit that matches the top moulding, hire a router table, and make some yourself.

As was said earlier, it's not really skirting - it's a cobbled-together cludge from separate components, possibly because whoever put that in couldn't get skirting to match the rest of the room

here's someone who might make it up for you

Thanks googler! As your name suggests, knowing the right words is half the battle. That site looks really helpful, we should find a match for the top part there.

Sadly the entire room is like this. The parts that we're missing we could get away with a non-exact match, especially if we took it to the corner like phill99 suggests, but just assembling it is already feeling stressful for someone as bad at DIY as me!

its made to look like Taurus skirt but its a bit if dado and hardboard or ply . difficult to match a 12inch skirt unless you do the same .not difficult if you find the same dado.

That's the same as we had installed 2 years ago to match (ish) some of the existing hotchpotch.

Torus, probably 140mm. Came as MDF so no warping etc and certainly not a board and a dado rail stuck together!

Lots of examples of profiles here: http://skirtingonline.co.uk/

Plus they do heights up to 400mm

abrighton did you see the second picture? It certainly looks like it is some board stuck to a batten with a rail on top! Or did you mean you got new stuff to match something like that?

Take what you've got there to a timber yard/sawmill. One close to me made me some custom architrave to match the existing Victorian stuff in my bedroom. It wasn't cheap but it wasn't exactly expensive either.
