Painting a fireplace

Options
I have a 1970's fireplace that runs the length of a wall (Only half way up though)

I love that we have a coal fire..... But its god awful to look at!

It's made of stone, its a sandstone colour with an orange (!) Mantel.

My plan is to paint the stone (either white / grey) and sand the mantel and stain.

The problem is I don't know what paint to use! Someone suggested Annie Sloan but its not exactly cheap!

Any ideas? (Bear in mind its a used fireplace)

Thanks in advance

  • If it's stone then any masonry paint should do the job.

I'm considering doing the same (ugly 70s fireplace but cant afford to replace it..and the plastering.. and a new carpet..)

Please let us know how you get on!

My parents got a plasterer in to fix up plasterboard over the offending stone chimney breast above the mantel and then wallpapers.
If you paint the stone you could be unlucky and the paint might flake with the heat.
