Dell Laptop not showing Internet Connection

Had the laptop for 3 years and all has been generally fine.

It was ok last night but this morning, turned it on and no net connection.

My desktop and phone are connecting to the net.

When I take the modem cable and physically connect to the laptop then there is internet.

Any suggestions please?

Does it show any available access points in the connections list ?
    ie your neighbours wifi ??

If it shows no connections atall then first thing is to make sure you havent turned off wireless by mistake. Some dell laptops have a slide switch on the side that you can flip by mistake sometimes.
Others have a combination of the Fn key and one of the function keys (usually f12 or around there)

If you are sure wireless is turned on, then make sure the wlan service is running via services.msc, and after that, reinstall the driver for your wireless card ..

  • Weird that it shows the other networks... maybe try clearing the history of your home network and reboot before setting it back up from scratch (if it finds it)

To delete a wireless network connection
    -Start Network and Sharing Center.
-In the Tasks pane, click Manage wireless networks.
-Right-click the connection you want to delete, and then click Remove network.
-In the Manage Wireless Networks - Warning dialog box, click OK.

first , have a look at your wlan report.

Open up a command prompt as administrator and type :-

    netsh wlan show wlanreport

Then browse to the location that it says it has created the report and look at it to see if any errors jump out.

Next i would try resetting the tcp/ip stack . So in the same admin command prompt , type :-

    netsh winsock reset
    netsh int ip reset
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns

    (press enter after each line)

Edit : Oh and it might be worth clearing the arp cache, so in that same window type :-

    arp -d (note the space)

Let us know how you get on

Have you tried rebooting your router?

    thanks to everyone.

I tried most of the above to no avail (probably because the issue was something else).

The fact it was picking up other wifi (neighbours) made me recheck my phone and the wifi was off there now. I turned phone off and on and played with the wifi buddy with no luck.

I hit the pin reset on the router and the wifi seems to be working now.

Glad to hear that it’s all fine now, I had similar issue in past, as sometimes rebooting the router doesn’t help, but resetting it fixes the issue and that exactly happened with me, but when we reset then all the setting also changes which I hate!

Unfortunately that's essentially the definition of a reset. :)
