cheap head lights and wipers etc

From this sunday (20th september) at Aldi, 30% brighter bulb replacement kit, consisting of 2 headlight bulbs, 5 other bulbs and 4 fuses for £3.99, (I've just paid £6.49 for one normal bulb from Halfords, I'm going to take it back). Also wiper blades for £3.99 a pair, also bought a pair from Halfords last year, cost £15 and they squeak something awful and give me an headache.

The difference between the Halfords bulb and the Aldi one is the Halfords one will last more than a week.

Try www.wiperblades.co.uk if you're after good quality blades that'll clear your windscreen properly. I managed to source a pair of Bosch Super Plus at over £10 less than Halfrauds :D
  • yes your right, bulbs from aldi are rubbish and most other budget bulbs too.
buy good bulbs like hella or ring, these will last for a considerably longer period of time than the cheaper option.2 winters ago i changed my both headlight bulbs twice over the winter period.after i got feed up doing this i bought 50% brighter ring bulbs from ebay with sidelight bulbs, the set did cost about £15 but well worth it,and yes they are actually brighter!
also saves the cold fingers on a winters night trying to change a bulb!

  • bosch wipers are usually the best, get ones with the spoilers if you drive on motorways a lot as these help keep the water on the blade being blown back on to the window.

Have to disagree with you. I only use bulbs from Aldi or Lidl, and only one has ever failed, over several years, and yes, the car is in daily use, night and day, summer and winter. As for wiper blades, I wasted money for years buying Bosch, beleiving that I was buying quality. Squeaking and noise was grim, and they had to be renewed every five minutes. Took a punt on some cheap chrome wipers on Ebay, and have never looked back, absolutely brilliant, dead quiet, and after 18 months still on the first set. No idea who makes them, or where they are from, but why can't the big boys manage even the basics. So, I suppose the moral is, don't be afraid to experiment, cheap is usually bad, but not always, as expensive is not always good. I have a feeling that some large manufacturers just rest on their laurels, content with a large market share, but that's a high risk policy, with the emerging Chinese and Indian manufacturing industries.
  • Just because you pay more at Halfords its not necessarily better, as I said I paid £15 for wiper blades from Halfords and they've been rubbish and squeaked loudly from the day I put them in. Aldi stuff tends to all have the German kite mark on and I would'nt be surprised if some are made by companies such as Bosch.

I recently bought a car dog harness from Wilko it cost £7, in fact sm, med and large all cost the same. In Halfords exactly the same Brand name product was on sale for £21, £22 and £23.

    How much? :D;)
  • totally agree, some of the items that aldi offer are great value for money and can out live some brands we are used to.
im only passing on my experience,i bought valeo wipers from a local motor factors for £20,thinking again a brand name they should be good, but they were terriblethey never seemed to clear the windscreen prperly,so i changed to bosh with the spoilers and they have been great.

i know its a bit off topic but have you tried the aldi jelly beans? these are in my opinion f***ing amazing and so addictive. try them
