Is it ok to buy this older model sony camera?

Hi all,

I'm looking to get my Mum an Sony DSCRX100, it's still £300 odd and still well regarded but I was wondering if the peripherals and extras will disappear from the market if the model gets to old or will Sony continue to support it?

I have a sneaking suspicion the extras from the new models [mark 2-4] might have been made compatible with this older model anyway?

I just noticed less places are stocking this earliest model and the original canon powershot too so a bit suspicious. What are thoughts on this vs the powershot? I understand it's very close performance wise.

Thank you, it is for Mum's birthday and we want it to last, unlike the cheapy coolpix et al cameras that get old very fast.

These bits of kit get "old" faster than your mum will, but is mum a looking for a camera for grandchildren , ebay listing or creative photography. What functions does she need, e.g. ability to save photos in raw format , does she need a viewfinder rather than an lcd which you can't see in the sun, The problem is your question is far too vague, sorry to ruin your thread.

Not at all, thank you for your help! I know what you mean as I was looking for my Sister recently who is semi-professional imo but discounted the same camera but 3 models up, I decided it didn't have the zoom she required.

My Mum is purely looking for a casual but decent click and shoot for family events and holidays, it is my Sister who said she wanted to pay extra for a bit more longevity and quality because the previous models we have brought have been cheap but newish coolpix ones which get old within a year or two if lucky. You almost blink and they're no longer functional tbh.

A looked after Nikon Coolpix will function perfectly today and outperform most phones, especially if it has a zoom lens.
I can't fathom how a good brand camera's design can get 'old' unless you're a tech fashion victim.

The reason that the Sony and many other cameras are in short supply is that the Japanese Sony plant that manufacturers the sensors for these cameras was badly damaged in an earthquake. I think it's only coming back in full production about now.

The 1" Sony sensor is used not just in Sony cameras, but also by Canon, Nikon and Panasonic.

The rx100 is still a superb camera, there's not really many accessories to add to it anyway (it's not compatible with a clip on viewfinder or flash) and you should be able to get batteries for a while. The newer versions add some fancier features but there's not a huge change in image quality, the comparatively huge 1in sensor it uses offers much better image quality than most compact cameras.

I used the mk 1 for a while and then upgraded to the mk 4 when it came out as I wanted the super slow motion video and nfc wireless. I gave the mk 1 rx100 to my mum and she's very pleased with it, she recently used it for a holiday away and was impressed with the photos the camera took. She does like the evf and tilting screen on the mk 4 but more than happy with the mk 1.

What extras do you need for this camera? If you mothers cameras have failed a rugged camera or a decent case might be a good investment.

Sadly it is not in stock anywhere so my options i've found are the Mark 2 in the same model, the canon powershot g9, the panasonic lumix t270 or the sony cybershot dshx90.

Not really sure where to go here, the rx100 mark 2 and canon powershot g9 have the larger sensor and are the premium products by far but at the same time it's not really a fair comparison and she is not an enthusiast so her needs aren't that great.
