Can't even get past step 1

I had 2 cards and a few loans years ago (early 2000's) and I don't have any details at all - I don't know the account numbers, I don't know exactly when I had the accounts, not even the year they opened or closed (i could take a wild stab in the dark but not sure at all). I am not 100% sure where I was living at the time of having them, as I moved house every year or so back then.
I just called the first one - Barclaycard, and they couldn't find any record of me. As they said they could only search via my name and postcode and none of the postcodes I gave them came up. So they told me to write to them.
Then I called Capital One and they could find me through name and DOB but I couldn't pass security because I couldn't answer any of their other questions. So now I have to write to them too.
The other lenders were New Look and Topshop store cards. Haven't the foggiest who I should contact in regards to them - GE Money, Santander, New Day??
I don't even know if I had PPI with all these lenders. I feel like I can't even get past step 1 with doing this myself. Shall I just go to a claims handling company? I feel like I stand a more realistic chance of getting it done that way then writing all these letters with no no details at all, as I can't remember anything.
Has anyone got any advice?

How will a claims company be able to help, apart from helping themselves to your cash? They don't know whether you had PPI or why you may have been mis sold it (although they will make some stuff up for you if you need them to).
Write to the companies in the first instance and see what comes back. While you're waiting for responses, try to remember why you were mis sold the policies as you will need to provide that in your complaint.0 -

If I write to them literally with just my DOB and name do you think they can locate my old account? I don't know what else I can tell them.0 -
Well it's not much, but if that's all you have, then that's all you can tell them.0

Put as much info as you can re old addresses, maiden name, married name etc.
If you have no success you could do a SAR request, this will cost £10 per company, but will give(if they still have anything) all info they hold on you.
You will also need reasons for mis sell.0 -

As for Barclaycard, they were performing internal reviews as they wrote to me out of the blue to say they'd identified PPI, identified it was mis-sold and refunded.
If you're convinced you had it, write to them with your details (name and dob) and as many addresses as you can remember with the periods of time you lived there. I did a similar thing with Yorkshire Bank and just asked them to check whether there was any PPI on any products I'd had with them. They sent me a list back within a few weeks.
All that happens with a claims company is they contact the lender with the information you give them. They don't actually do anything you can't do yourself!0 -
as someone that's worked for a CMC (in the past) DON'T contact them for help. even though their ads sound like they'll take away all the stress and do the whole thing for you that's BS!
write to all your lenders, don't call them. they'll have to acknowledge you and open a complaint, you don't need to go into details just explain around about when you think you took out the loan/credit card etc and list all your address and change of names if you have any.ex Claims management company credit controller
