  • A bit more of a description of needs please?

Do you want to watch movies/TV/videos?
    Will you need graphics editing?
    Will you need audio editing?
What sort of internet usage will there be?

More info of this type will help us to narrow down what you need.

If, as I suspect, it's only basic usage then £500 will get you probably a better machine than you think you need.

Of course, you'll buy one, find something else you'd like to do, then want to upgrade.

    Not like me

Why not consider a used system and then you will learn in time what your needs are. Just ask someone with a bit of IT knowledge to help. New systems are often overkill esp. if the main use will be surfing the net. XP has still got a lot of life in it and Vista just invites problems at this early stage of its life.
