Tax credits over payment x screwing me over

Just been on the phone to Tax credits and they have informed me that their is a dept over over a grand and saying that I am liable to pay half for as it is from a past relationship.

I never once delt with Tax credits while in this past relationship I always left it up to my x partner to deal with all finances assuming that their would be no issues. She has obviously messed up somewhere and now I am having to pay for her mistakes. Do I have any say in this as feel it is unfair of me to pay for her mistakes. What happens if i refuse to pay this?

Yet I never delt with any finances at all. She delt with it all i was not working at the time. I think highly unfair that I have to pay for her mistakes.

You will have no doubt benefitted from the overpayment, if you weren't working it may have laid your rent, for your food, for your heating etch

Fair enough but she also received payments after we separated from what I have been told on the phone.

If it was a joint claim even after she was single then it is also your Responsibility to inform them that a joint claim is no longer appropriate.

As said, it's equally your responsibility. If she dealt with it then that's your choice, not theirs. If the overpayment is incorrect then there are routes you can go down but it doesn't sound like that's the case here.
