Hi,
I am really hoping can help me or point me in the right direction. My daughter had been offered s place last minute in a drama school in London to study a diploma 6 in Progfesional theatre. She is 21. She has had an Advanced Loan for the cost of half of the course and I have to find the remainder as well as paying for her accommodation in London. I am a single parent and will only be able to do this by asking family to help which I don't think is fair. The problem we have is we live in Wales and apparently the Welsh government do not provide maintenance loans for students who are studying diplomas? Whilst students in England do receive this.

Can anyone please help me as to where I can look for more funding.

Many Thanks

You could contact the Welsh arts council, they may offer funding.

    The link below may help.

This is the general information for funding such a course, plus, of course, any part time earnings she may have.

  • thanks for replying but she is too late for the Da da as the college had already given all of theirs out for this year, hopefully she can apply for a top up scholarship. Anyone know of why Welsh students cannot get maintenance loans? She is moving to London on her own
    Thanks

They do fund diplomas of higher education and higher national diplomas and arts diplomas that lead to a Trinity college London diploma from a large list of approved arts schools.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to get full funding. Comparable to going to a private school - unless you can fund yourself there is not much available.

A friend's niece managed to afford it by living with family in London and by putting on concerts in her home town. You do need a large base of friends and family to support this.

If she's too late for dada funding, it might well be better for her to defer her place and apply early next year. This would give her the additional advantage for her to get some savings behind her to take some of the financial weight off you.

Funding for Drama schools can be incredibly difficult. It's the reason we keep see articles in the media about how many actors attended private schools.

Am not entirely sure you can defer either, not in the sense that they'll keep your place open for next year. You can decline and audition again next year, but no guarantee she'll be offerred a place. Might vary in different institutions though, so worth an ask.

I have a young teenage wannabe thespian in my house, so I've already looked into this minefield!
    There is a website called
    http://notapushymum.com/

for the families of performing arts students. You could ask your question there, someone might have been through this before.
