Has anyone with afternoon boost changed electric supplier?

I have a total of 11.5 hrs off peak mechanical electric meter for night storage radiators, with 3 hrs in the afternoon and 8.5 hrs at night. My supplier is "closing my tariff" and offering Economy 7 or 10, the times of the later are midnight to 5pm, 1pm to 4 pm, and 8pm to 10pm and changing the meter.

I have been reluctant to change supplier in the past for fear of loosing my afternoon boost. It is rumoured that someone down the road lost it, but then they had changed to British Gas!

Has anyone with elect storage rads and afternoon boost experience of changing their supplier, or anyone with advice about changing supplier?

    Welcome to the forum.

Most suppliers in England only have Economy 7.

In Scotland there are a host of different dual rate tariffs(white meter, Comfort etc) some not now available.

I don't know where you live, but you should examine your tariff prices carefully as some are very poor value these days; and E7 is often a better option.
  • The original 60a space heating [Electricair] was a mechanical version of underfloor / storage heating. Modern metered E7/E10 tariffs replaced the mechanical white meter around the early 80's. You can have E7 or the more expensive E10 on a modern tariff & meter, however many of these older wired systems were on much older wiring regs. Check with your neighbour down the road how they got on !.................. !

What is the name of your current suppliers tariff?? The one that is closing down.
If you have a Legacy Tariff meter, they generally have 3 or more readings, you will find it very difficult to find a supplier that supports the type of meter you have at the property. If this is the case the meters themselves are no longer manufactured, so the suppliers can't replace like for like when the meter's accuracy can't be guaranteed

Thanks guys, I am in Norfolk.

In terms of the lounge diner, I notice the affect of the afternoon boost, so with E7 I would have to turn the heaters up and when it's really cold have the electric fire on the evenings for longer or set higher. At the moment, when it's really cold I have the electric fire on in the lounge in the evenings.

The hall radiator heats the kitchen, toilet and bathroom as I leave the doors ajar, so I don't know the effect of not having the boost particularly in the kitchen.

The biggest problem on E7 is the bedroom, as I don't want the heat at night in the bedroom and anyway the heater wakes me up clicking on and off.

There is enough capacity to add one extra heater to the system, or maybe two small ones.

    ...

Well I can suggest a couple of options for you here:

    1. Get yourself some A/C fitted and get it to compete with the heater. Hopefully the A/C will drown out the noise of the heater too :)

    or

    2. Turn the heater off

Look at the prices you pay for the three periods(day/night/afternoon) and compare them with E7 or even a normal 24/7 tariff.
