British Gas chasing a refund
Hi there,
Anyone got advice on the following? We moved out and closed our account with British Gas in May, we were posted a refund of approx £400 that we queried but were assured was correct. They've just contacted us stating it was an error and that they want it back.
It appears they did make an error, as we suspected and spoke to them about, however they want the money back which has now since been cashed by us.
Any similar experiences or advice?
Cheers

Sorry to give bad news, but BG have up to 6 years to correct a billing error and demand payment - ( You could also go back 6 years and demand repayment if you found you had overpaid )
If this demand puts a strain on the family finances contact BG and agree a payment plan, but get whatever is agreed confirmed in writing0 -
Above is correct.
Additionally get it settled quickly or the debt will be passed to a Debt Collection Agency and get your credit record trashed.0 -

And if you do agree a repayment plan make sure they don't start blacklisting you at the CRAs with an agreement to pay notification. Get confirmation from them that they won't report the debt to the CRAs.0
