British Gas & Wescot taking me for a ride?

So i moved property last year and in my new property i got a "top up meter" installed and while doing this i paid of around £265 off the bill from the previous property and at the time i was told that was that, no more bills on the previous property.

Low and behold a few month later they send me a bill for the previous property, so i called them and talked to them about it and explained what i was told over the phone. To my surprise (or should i have been?) they said there was no mention of this in the notes? and that the bill was the final month of me staying in the property even thou i told BG i was no longer living there. I told them to send me a full run down of the bills and time/dates for me to see, they never came!

In the end i receive a letter from Wescot asking me for this money. I called them and told them i was waiting for the bills to be sent but as expected they continued to ask for this money. In the end Wescot sent me a letter that offered a "settlement" payment with a reduced figure. I agreed and paid this offer they had sent and received a confirmation letter from Wescot stating i had paid and that a letter was sent to BG to arrange for my credit file to be updated.

2 weeks go by and a letter from BG pops through the door, i owe them ££ again? how? Turns out they do not accept settlement payments and Wescot should know this (so the chap on the phone said) so now it's Wescot's fault? In all i have spent a good few hours on the phone getting passed from pillar to post over at BG who could not make heads or tales of the situation.

Should i pay this remaining balance even thou i agreed and paid the offered settlement? Seems like extortion!

    Forget the phone

WRITE a letter to BG heading it Complaint
This saga is complex so lay it out as Bullet Points and concentrate on the failure to respond to a request for copy billing, and Wescot acting as their Agent offering settlement terms and payment, that BG now refuse to accept
  • Thanks for the advice.

I have been talking to Wescot who have now said they are going to contact BG and get back to me but i will be following up the call later today.

If nothing has been done today then i will proceed to write the letter of complaint.

    Thanks again.
