How do I know if i had PPI?

Like many other people, I have had various phone calls about reclaiming ppi. I didn't think that I had actually taken any out but all these companies kept saying I did. Long story short, I went through the whole phone call and this company were convinced that with my various closed credit cards I had a claim worth over £5000. Again I still wasn't convinced.
The girl on the phone said it cost her company £500 to process PPI so she didn't put a claim through that she wasn't confident about.
Now having thought about all my old accounts, I had a Barclaycard when i was bout 22. Now at the time I was earning about 10k but they gave me card with a limit of 9k. I remember this because asked them why the limit was so high given my salary. Anyway. I remember paying some kind of insurance for a year that was about £80.
Is it likely I had PPI and is it worth perusing myself?
Thanks

It's usually a simple matter to contact the banks and financial institutions which you used in the past and ask them directly if you had PPI. You can also see it on each monthly credit card statement itemised on a separate line. You could spend £10 per lender and send each a Subject Access Request (SAR) letter and legally they have to supply all records they have kept on file for you. The latter is all a claim company might do and so they'd need to send 50 SARs for their "costs" to be £500 per customer..
Complicating matters is the fact that PPI was only payable on credit cards when the account had a balance, so if you regularly paid it off each month you won't have paid much even if you had PPI.
You also don't say how long ago you were 22. On closed accounts it's likely no records beyond six years will have been kept.
You are also handicapped if you have no account details.0 -
You have read the site guides (quick links are at the top of this page)?0

I was 22 seven years ago and closed the account in 2013. It always had a balance on it until I cleared it. My Noddle account shows the last few digits of the account number but nothing else. Would my bank be able to tell me the account number as I had a DD set up for it?0

The complaints process is free of charge to use. To post a complaint, it takes a stamp and an envelope and about 5-10 minutes. So, £500 is complete BS. Although some claims companies pay their cold calling sales reps a commission just for getting people to sign up with them.
Think about it logically. Has this claims company verified you have PPI? Have they taken details down about what you told them about the sale? Have they looked at the available paperwork and audit trail to see if there are any failures? If no, then they cant be confident about anything. Is it likely I had PPI and is it worth perusing myself?
Remember that there is nothing wrong about having PPI. it is about the sales process used.
So, if you are going to make a complaint about the PPI sale, what exactly did they do that you feel was wrong?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). i hope i can be a help to you, i currently work in PPI for a bank and previously worked for a CMC.
first of all the CMC's that call you telling you, you could claim back around X amount of thousands is SO incorrect. every claim and redress is unique there is no "minimun or average" they can guarantee. they have no say in how your redress is calculated.
secondly it cost the CMC the price of an envelope to process your claim for you, that person calling you is an outbound sales agent that works on a very basic salary and gaining commission for every person that agrees to sign up so they WILL tell you what you want to hear.
to be clear - CMC's have no idea how much you're entitled to.
given the time when you took out a barclaycard you probably did end up getting PPI, so if you want to make a complaint write to barclaycard or use their online questionnaire, don't sign that CMC contract and persue this yourself (trust me on this) they don't have access to special ways of getting ppi, all they'll do is send the FOSQ plus covering letter for you and that's it.ex Claims management company credit controller
