Isle of Wigit. Train to Portsmouth or Southampton and catamaran across. Plenty of sandy beaches, and good public bus service.

Inverness, Oban or Fort William all have train stations but obviously all in Scotland.

Loads to see and do within easy reach of all three.

Also many ferry routes leave Oban for various island day trips.

Scarborough? ( although near York! )

I was also going to suggest south Devon - Exeter etc.
  • Couple? Children?
What time of year - school holidays or off-peak?
    What do you like doing?

In the absence of such useful information ...

    Parts of Dorset:
    Weymouth or Poole, for beaches.
Good rail and bus links inland to historic places like Dorchester, and to areas for lovely rural walking.
Or if you don't need to actually stay at the seaside, consider Wareham, a riverside town, with Quay, with good access to Poole and Dorchester.
I stayed in Dorchester last year; my research showed more, and cheaper, self-catering options in Wareham, plus plenty of evening trains, and I will stay there in future for a change.

    Add to Devon list:
Exmouth, on the East side of the Exe estuary. Good rail and bus links back up the river to Topsham and Exeter. Good bus links eastwards for lovely coastal or riverside walks, or village-pottering, at Budleigh Salterton, Otterton and Sidmouth. Exmouth is an unpretentious place full of families on holiday in the summer; quieter in June and September.

Add to the Cambrian Coast (Wales) list. Two places close together but very different. 3 miles of deserted sandy beach between the two!
Aberdyfi/Aberdovey - very pretty town within the Snowdonia National Park. Beach, but estuary, so not so good for actually swimming. Harbour, charming, more up-market.
Tywyn - outside the SnowdoniaNP, so unpretentious, family- orientated with safe swimming.

Thank you for some great suggestions. It would be for family of 4 and we live in Scotland so have done all of the Scottish suggestions. We usually try and go at start of July when English and Welsh schools still in and we aren't as tends to be cheaper and quieter.

    Thanks again.
