Help! Enforcement Agents Letter

I am in a really bad place financially. Due to mental health problems and a drinking problem mostly.

I am getting help for both those things and I am starting to come out of it. I haven't been opening my post.

I opened my post today and found there was a letter from a debt enforcement agency dated 10/8/2016 who have been to visit the house to take control of goods for an amount owed of 1880.48.

I am so terrified. I don't have enough money to pay this is in full There certainly isn't anything worth that amount here. Can I offer to pay part of it and ask for more time? I don;t know what to do. I am in such a mess I feel like I am going to lose everything.

  • Op first don't panic. There is always a solution for debt. Second the first step is to find out what your financial position is . So sit down with a cup of tea and work out your income, what you spend it on and your debts. Then there is help out there either cab, national debt line or step change. Look up the websites of the first two . You will find tools and resources to help you. Teach yourself about priority and non priority debts. But it all starts with you. Don't be scared there will be a way through. Good luck

  • Yes, it's for unpaid council tax. Does that make a difference?

Yes it does, its a priority debt, and needs dealing with.

These enforcement agents are notoriously difficult to deal with, so, best advice, is to make sure they don't enter your property, they cant break in or force entry, but can enter through an unlocked door.

They will only attempt contact approx. 3 times, after that, they simply pass the account back to the council.

You really need to get on top of this, so contacting the council and getting them to take back the account earlier will be the cheapest option for you, as you will have to pay various stages of enforcement fees.

I would be on the phone to them 1st thing in the morning, and attempt to make some kind of payment arrangement with them, being honest with them is the best policy.

  • OK I have just phoned the number on the letter and agreed a payment plan to pay this by 20th September. Still shaking but I am so relieved that no-one is going to turn up at my house in order to take all of mine and my daughter's stuff. Unfortunately there's no confirmation email or anything which is quite scary.
  • Remember the golden rule with bailiffs is not to let them in. And as sourcrates has said this is a priority debt so you need to stick to the repayments.

Quite. And don't engage in any conversation with them.

I'm not clear. Have you made an arrangement with the bailiff or direct with the council?

Have you agreed to pay the whole £1880.48 by 20 Sept or just an instalment? How much are the instalments?

Can you actually afford to pay what you've agreed?

Thy can't take your daughter's stuff, unless they also have a Liability Order against her.
