Spent a weekend in London with a wheelchair user and have to praise the Black Cab Drivers who were always very helpful in loading and unloading the wheelchair user ! making sure the pavements were level for both operations

You make it sound as if the taxi drivers or owners set the fares.
They don't. It all down to TFL.0 -
I always take black cabs - two minicab experiences in London show why...
1) trying to cross the river from the O2 through Blackwall Tunnel at night. First night, black cab, £13. Second night, minicab £25 'fixed fee'.
2) trying to get from Putney Bridge to Paddington Station in a hurry. Minicab arrives and the driver asks me "Yeah, what street's that on?". Dammit as a taxi driver you should know other places in relation TO Paddington.
Always a black cab, always a driver who knows where they're going and always pay the honest meter fare.0 -

You should give uber a go. They don't get lost, are significantly cheaper than a black cab and you can track the car while it's on route to you.0 -
I agree with the black cabs, never had a bad experience, my partner is also in a wheelchair and echo the experience of the op.
I live in the sticks on the south coast and people down here are horrible.
Hospital appointments down here are never punctual, and staff are usually far from friendly, but when we have to attend either Guys or St. Thomas' in London the appointments have always been punctual, (within 10 minutes of appointment time), and the staff are very friendly. For a big city it has surprised us how friendly and helpful people there can be.0 -
As a Londoner that spends a lot of time driving around Zone 1, much as I find Black Cabs irritating, you cannot fault the way they are with disabled and elderly.
I also like the way they voluntarily take war veterans on battle field trips and disadvantaged kids to the seaside.
It almost makes up for their selfish driving0
