I have to say that our wedding was pretty excellent - well I would, wouldn't I?!!! However, so many people have complemented me on it being so relaxed.

We got married in my parents' local church, officiated over by the vicar who had known me for the best part of my life. I walked to the church and then back again - so everyone followed us back up the middle of the road to my parents' house where there was a marquee on the lawn (they live on a farm, so nothing flash!). Guests were given Pimms and canapes while DH and I were having photos taken. Meanwhile, the dog was parading around demanding canapes too! The photos didn't take too long because I've been to far too many weddings where you're "stranded" for 1 or 2hrs.

We had a good mix of people there (120 for a buffet/sit down thing) and even friends who were really nervous because they didn't know anyone other than us seemed to get on like houses on fire with others on their tables. We had a free bar, but that was basically wine left over from the meal, draught beer and soft drinks.

So, I suppose you could say that it was "posh", but money WAS an object.

    Have a great wedding BS!

  • We had a cheap and cheerful wedding, planned and carried out within about six weeks! Bought my dress from Meadowhall shop (can't remember where!), friend made me a bouquet from market flowers (it was lovely), took our own photos, had reception in back garden at home (only invited people I really wanted there). Only regret is the photo's aren't fantastic, would perhaps splash out there if I was doing it again - which I'm not!!!!
Cheap wedding but happily married for 8 years and together for 17 years

    1% challenge - £4018 - reduce by 100 payments of £41.
  • My cousin had a posh wedding. They split up before the photo's were back from the printers so left my auntie to pay for a box full of useless pictures

My wedding cost £300. Still married after 24 years.

My rose gold wedding ring was my grandma's who died the year before. It will be 100 years old next year!
Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me

I love 'home made weddings' where the couple and their family put the emphasis on sharing celebrating their marriage rather than impressing the guests.

I admit to grimacing when invited to attend weddings held in older 'conference venues'. It will be called "something manor, something priory" or "something Hotel & Country Club". However much I care for the happy couple I know as guests we are going to be staying overnight in an overpriced, shabby, small twin room.

Sorry, gracious I sound like Scrooge.

Our wedding was middle of the road expensive ie 4k 7 years ago tommorrow ). We had a civil service at a local Abbey, then sit down dinner for 40 and a hot buffet for 150 in the evening at a hotel.

People still comment about our wedding now when we attend others, as the hot buffet was never ending with the hotel still replacing food at 10pm!

Plan the wedding day you want, and spend whatever you like as long as you can afford it; it's a day for you to enjoy.

We went to a reception a few years back. The bride and groom had a secret ceremony at the registry office and then text everyone "xxxxx and I have just got married, if you would like to celebrate with us then join us at the pub for drinks"
Only had to pay the registrar, rings and outfits...bargain

My friend's sister and her boyfriend invited all their close friends to a meal to celebrate them being together for 10 years. Earlier that day, they'd gone to a registry office with only very close family (ie mums, dads and siblings). At the meal, they started the speechs with "my wife and I"................ People suddenly twigged!

    Best wedding:
Our wedding cost escalated because the guest list kept growing as we didn't want to leave out family or friends. So, we ended up with having the reception at the local pub (oldest in our town) right opposite the church. Even though it was decorated in regency stripe and the toilets reminded more of school than anywhere posh, it was so cosy and homely, plenty of seats for everyone and lots of different little crooks and crannys for people to sit in and chat.

Instead, we spent the cash on really cracking roast dinner for all with a great range of pre-chosen veggie meals and ever flowing drinks. We managed to keep the bar free all day for 120 guests and 200 in the evening purely because the venue hadn't cost anything beyond the cost of food and drink and it was local pub prices. The pub was open to the public from 7pm onwards but the reception rooms at the back were ours alone and in reality we took over the whole place anyhow.

    HIghlights were:
Taking all the group photos first in 30 mins total so everyone could disappear to the pub, a bouncy castle in the cobbled pub garden until 1am (provided by a friend who'd just started hireing them out), a £200 local amateur trad jazz band in the evening, a VERY cheesy DJ disco in the evening who agreed to play all the songs we listed and took mp3s from us of the ones he didn't have, a local minibus we hired for £100 for the night to leave every 30 mins to take people back to their B&Bs.

The night before the wedding, I did a quick tour of a couple of local hotels where I knew elderly relatives were staying and eating dinner and just popped my head in and checked they were all settled in and didn't have any problems or questions. Some of my husbands elderly aunts that i had never met were just amazed that a bride would do such a thing on the night before her wedding and were so touched. I found that knowing they were all alright was the best thing I could do to relax!!

We had so many comments about how it was the best wedding people had been to because the focus was on making sure everyone was comfortable and had a great time - this is what made us happy on the day as a couple -seeing everyone else hassle free and well fed!

LOL. I've probably written far too much but hey, it was our first anniversary last month and I just got all nostaligic over thinking how much I enjoyed it!

    Worst wedding:
a recent one where we weren't told any of the timings and had a small toddler with us so had no idea when dinner was, what it was and were only given one drink for the whole day and had to stand around for 2 hours whilst the photos were taken!
