have a machine here that was running win 8/8.1 however no disc (or key) available now , upgraded to win 10 and activated ,showed as a digital entitlement. but then lost its licence entitlement . probably after the anniversary update (but not sure)
wiped the drive and reloaded win 10 from a pendrive (dated about 04/2017) and it came up as not recognised and suggesting I buy a licence .
downloaded the latest ISO from Microsoft onto a pendrive and ran it within windows
now showing as "registered with your organisations activation service"
new one on me , any ideas?

You've done that wrong.
Should have used the Win8 restore partition/backup instead. Then upgraded that with the Win 10 download0 -
the machine was a refirb , with a clean install of windows on it , there was no restore partition snd no backup was made , as the machine was not in usedSave a Rachael

A slightly sneaky way to still get Win10 upgrade is to use the 'Assistive technology' upgrade - MS still allow users that require special assistance to upgrade to Win10 and it'll work for anyone else too.
It's the same upgrade process as before except that you have to tick a box to say you require assistive technologies (could be the magnifying glass or large screen fonts that Windows provides as standard)

ok , but why did it loose its digital entitlement , but when manually updated to latest version , show as "registered with your organisations activation service"
I am not in any organisations , apart from the RAC , is repairing windows a new sideline for them?Save a Rachael

You were likely sold a dodgy Windows volume licence.0 -
I too was under the impression that once you upgraded to 10 and got digital entitlement, that somehow Microsoft would remember your hash keys linked to your hardware or motherboard (or whatever the correct terminology is) and then you could do a clean install of windows 10 and Microsoft would confirm your previous digital entitlement and you would be activated.
Like all stuff technical things do go wrong.
But who cares what language they use as long as you are activated.0 -
OK , I think I have a half answer to this , the secondary drive (500g) had been used on another machine , and just had win 10 deleted , but not the partitions (uefi) , at some point the machine had booted from this drive and tried to do a repair install.Save a Rachael
