Overpaid tax repayment

Hello, I filled in my self assessment form for last tax year, and was told I had overpaid tax by £400+. I requested a repayment several weeks ago. I checked my HMRC account re status of the repayment, and saw that it said paid with a date of 31st Jan 2017. Does this mean I have to wait until then to get the repayment?

I have had tax repayments from HMRC in the past after completing my self assessment tax return and they were in my account within a couple of weeks. I think you need to speak to them about this.

You might be mistaken, there's no reason you would have to wait until next January.

Check your account again, does it actually specify a repayment has been issued or is your account just in credit to the tune of £400?

If there's just a credit and no refund then maybe best phoning the HMRC to find out what the delay is? Do you have any debts (tax credits?) to HMRC they might need to sort out first before they let you have any income tax refund?
  • Thanks for the helpful responses. I thought it would go in my bank account especially as they asked for this information. Couldn't understand why it hadn't gone in. My account with HMRC is 00.00. When I look at my account details with them It says repayment with the date in January next year. Will chase them up, but do they ever actually answer the phone?!

According to regular posters on the MSE Cutting Tax board/forum 07:45 is the best time to ring.

However, as you now mentions that your HMRC account shows 0.00 I think the problem may be that you haven't actually sent HMRC your return, rather you've completed it online but not pressed the final button to send it through the interweb to the HMRC.

Maybe best to check your online account to see what state your tax return for 2015:16 shows up as.

If it has gone through to the HMRC then perhaps you could tell us every entry on your current self assessment account as something's not right somewhere along theline.
  • Must have talked the repayment up! It has now gone into my bank account! Thank you Dazed and Confused, (although you don't sound it to me!)
