Contactless Cards in M&S

I purchased some greetings cards in M&S and used a gift voucher. To pay for the small balance due I pulled out my cards to use my M&S credit card. The cashier asked if I had a contactless card in my cards as the balance due had been paid. This had happened to her before. The balance due was small so the payment was not a big problem but today my new Santander123 Debt Gold card arrived and this is also contactless. I now realise that all contactless cards should be wrapped in tinfoil? or in a special wallet otherwise we could be paying for other folks shopping as we walk passed. Be warned.

Again? Whenever I read about unexpected payment by a contactless card in a pocket, it seems to be M&S ...

No need to wrap in tinfoil. Simply buy a protective wallet or purse, Amazon has loads.

Did you wave maybe not wave but did you hold your wallet over the contactless machine ?

As Tigsteroonie says there's enough of the RFID wallets on amazon and ebay.

Should not be necessary to have a special wallet. Industry needs to sort this out.

    Like how?
There is a lot of hype over contactless payment and what can/can't do. You have to present your card to the reader, so you can't pay for someone's shopping ahead of you in the queue. Accidental payments are when people hold their wallet in hand when aiming to put a card in a reader.

    From Which?
    Accidental contactless payments
It is possible to pay for something without meaning to, but only when you’re close to the reader. This means you shouldn’t accidentally be charged for someone else’s purchase while waiting in a queue, for example.

A contactless card should only be charged if it’s within 10cm of a contactless reader. But in practice, most terminals will not take payment until the card is a few centimetres away - in our tests, the maximum was 5cm.

Contactless terminals are programmed so that they only take one payment from one card for any one transaction. Readers have also been designed to reject payment if two contactless cards are presented at the same time.
  • My contactless card was in a bundle of cards (Loyalty cards etc) at least 3 feet away from the machine

Very strange as contactless cards are physically unable to work at that distance from the machine.
  • Well it happened I was just posting a warning so it doesn't happen to anyone else

Maybe you need to let the store know that this happened it may be that there is system fault on the device you used? It great to raise your issue but what will you next time you shop?
