Income Support for Carer

Friend has just started claiming CA and I mentioned he might get Income Support as well.
He phoned the claim line and was told he would have to claim Universal credit instead?
Does this sound correct or should it be IS still.
Been a long time since I claimed and have no idea.

Yes, this is possible if he is in an area where he meets the eligibility criteria (which it seems he does)
He will still receive the Carer's allowance as a separate payment but it will be counted as income for his UC. He will have a Carer's premium (extra money) to his UC 'allowance'.
So, if he is eligible for UC then he needs to put in a claim.
